Primary narrative

Hi, I'm Maya

I spent 12 years in tech leadership — VP of Product at two venture-backed startups, a stint in Big Tech, and one spectacular burnout that changed everything. That burnout taught me what no MBA ever could: great leadership isn't about having the answers. It's about asking better questions, holding space for your team, and knowing yourself well enough to lead without armor. I'm now an ICF-certified coach (PCC) with 500+ hours of 1:1 coaching under my belt. I work with ambitious leaders who are done performing and ready to start leading for real.

How I Work

Coaching with me is structured but never rigid. We start with a deep-dive intake to map your leadership landscape — strengths, blind spots, stakeholder dynamics, and the goals that matter most. From there, we meet biweekly over Zoom. Between sessions, you'll get frameworks, reflective prompts, and async support via email. I draw on evidence-based models (ACT, systemic coaching, strengths-based development) without the jargon. This isn't advice-giving. It's a thinking partnership designed to unlock what you already know but haven't been able to access under pressure.

What I Help With

01

✦ Stepping Into a New Role

First 90 days as a director, VP, or C-suite leader. Build credibility fast without burning out or burning bridges.

02

✦ Managing Up & Across

Navigate tricky stakeholder dynamics, influence without authority, and get alignment in orgs that love to debate.

03

✦ Building & Leading Teams

Hire well, delegate with confidence, give feedback that lands, and create a culture people don't want to leave.

04

✦ Avoiding or Recovering From Burnout

Set sustainable boundaries, rediscover intrinsic motivation, and lead from a place of energy instead of obligation.

05

✦ Executive Presence & Communication

Own the room in board meetings, all-hands, and difficult 1:1s. Say less, mean more, and stop over-explaining.

06

✦ Career Inflection Points

Deciding between the promotion and the pivot? We'll think through the decision with honesty, data, and zero judgment.

Maya Chen speaking on stage

Speaking & Workshops

I speak at conferences and run workshops for leadership teams on topics like psychological safety, giving feedback that actually changes behavior, and the leadership identity shift from IC to executive. Past stages include LeadDev, First Round Capital's CEO Summit, SXSW Interactive, and private offsites for Series A–D companies. Interested in having me speak or facilitate? Reach out below with your event details.

Maya helped me go from a nervous first-time VP to someone who actually enjoys leading. She has this rare ability to challenge you without making you feel defensive. Six months in, my team's engagement scores were the highest in the company.

David Park

VP of Engineering, Series C SaaS

I came to Maya ready to quit my job. Instead, she helped me understand what was actually broken — my relationship with boundaries. I'm still at the same company, but I lead completely differently now. My Sunday scaries are gone.

Amira Hassan

Director of Product, Fintech

Working with Maya was the single best investment I made in my first year as a founder. She helped me build a leadership operating system — how I run 1:1s, how I give feedback, how I make decisions. I reference her frameworks every single week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you typically work with?
Most of my clients are mid-career tech leaders — directors, VPs, and first-time C-suite executives at companies ranging from seed-stage startups to public companies. I also work with founders. The common thread is ambition paired with self-awareness: people who know they're good but want to get genuinely great.
What's a discovery call like?
It's a relaxed 30-minute Zoom conversation. I'll ask about your current role, what's feeling hard, and what you'd want to be different in 6 months. You can ask me anything about how I work. There's zero pressure to sign up — I only take clients where I genuinely believe I can help.
How is coaching different from therapy?
Therapy typically focuses on healing past wounds and diagnosing clinical conditions. Coaching is forward-looking and performance-oriented — we focus on who you're becoming as a leader and how to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be. That said, I'll always refer you to a therapist if I think that's what you need. They're complementary, not competing.
Can my company pay for this?
Absolutely, and many do. Most companies with L&D or executive development budgets will cover coaching for senior leaders. I can provide an invoice, SOW, or speak directly with your HR/People team to make it easy.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Life happens. I ask for 24 hours' notice to reschedule. If you need to pause your engagement for a major life event, we'll work it out — I'm flexible and human about this.
Do you work with people outside the US?
Yes — about a third of my clients are international. All sessions happen over Zoom and I'm comfortable working across time zones. I typically hold sessions between 8 AM and 6 PM Pacific, but I can flex for clients in Europe or APAC.
What's your cancellation / refund policy?
After our first session, if you feel it's not the right fit, I'll refund the remainder of your package — no questions asked. I've never had to do this, but the option is there so you can commit with confidence.
